Layne was an intrinsic part of AIC's sound despite your statement to the contrary. A thousand other bands attempted to poorly copy Layne's (at times) warbling inflection and failed miserably to achieve the soul, range, depth or harmonic sensibility that his voice possessed. The characteristic guitar riffs that make up AIC's sound are always present as are their harmonies. This I will credit Jerry heavily for. However, to say that AIC could have survived without trying to find an equally well rounded and talent front man is a falsehood. The addition of William to the band was a blessing and a necessity because he seems to have a musicianship, style and vocal ability on par with Layne. I have high hopes for the album and all future endeavors by Alice in Chains. In today's music industry there are no truly diverse rock bands left. For modern bands coming out there are more important things to do than push boundaries. For one, try getting in touch with your roots and pay homage to them in your own unique way.
